Hair fibers usually hide thinning best when you still have some hair in the area, because they cling to each strand and make it look thicker. A hair thickening powder or root touch-up spray only tints the scalp and hair, so the gap looks darker but not fuller. Powders and sprays suit a wide parting or a hairline better.
We are often asked this on WhatsApp. Someone has tried a scalp concealer spray from a chemist, or a powder compact from a salon, and wants to know: hair fibers or powder, which one looks more natural? Or is a root touch up for thinning hair enough on its own? The honest answer is that these three products do different jobs. Once you see how each one works, choosing gets much easier.
How do hair fibers, hair powder and root touch-up spray actually work?
All three belong to a group dermatologists call hair camouflage. A 2022 review by dermatologists at LTMMC and General Hospital, Mumbai, published in the International Journal of Trichology, describes fibers, concealing powders and styling sprays as temporary options that reduce the contrast between your hair and your scalp. Where they differ is in how they do it.
Hair fibers: they add volume
Hair building fibers are tiny coloured strands. Ours are plant-based rayon, 0.3 to 0.5 mm long, made in Japan since 1986. When you shake them over thinning hair, a static charge makes them stick to the hairs you already have. Each strand becomes slightly thicker, the gaps between strands close up, and the scalp shows through less.
The key word is volume. Fibers add physical bulk to your hair, which is why they can make a thin crown look full rather than just darker. The same Mumbai review notes the limit too: because fibers bond to existing hair, they do little on a completely bald, shiny patch.
Hair thickening powder: it tints the scalp and roots
A hair thickening powder (sometimes sold as a hairline powder or root cover compact) is pressed or loose pigment that you dab or brush onto the scalp and the base of the hair. It colours the skin so it matches your hair. The parting looks narrower because the pale line between strands is now dark.
Powder does not add bulk. Your hair is still as fine as before. It simply hides the scalp underneath. According to the same review, concealing powders are good at covering the frontal hairline, but they have to be applied daily and can wash away with water or heavy sweating.
Root touch-up spray: it tints in a fine mist
A scalp concealer spray or root touch-up spray works like the powder but goes on as an aerosol. It sprays coloured pigment onto the scalp and the roots. It is quick and covers a larger area in one pass.
Like powder, it tints but does not thicken. It can also land on skin you did not mean to colour, such as the forehead or ears, if you are not careful with the nozzle.
Hair fibers vs spray vs powder: side-by-side comparison
This table compares the three product types in general. Results vary by formula, so treat it as a guide, not a lab test.
| Feature | Hair fibers | Hair thickening powder | Root touch-up / scalp concealer spray |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it does | Clings to existing hair and makes each strand thicker | Tints the scalp and roots to match hair colour | Sprays pigment onto the scalp and roots |
| Adds volume | Yes, visibly fuller hair | No, colour only | No, colour only |
| Scalp coverage | Good where some hair remains; weak on fully bald skin | Good on a parting or hairline; precise | Good over a wide area; less precise |
| Look close-up | Natural when the right shade is used and the fibers are set | Natural on the parting; can look flat or “painted” if overdone | Can look matte or coated on the scalp if sprayed too close |
| Sweat and rain hold | Moderate on its own; much better with a setting mist | Varies; many wash away with heavy sweat or water | Varies by formula; some are water-resistant, many run in rain |
| Transfer to pillow or collar | Low once set with a mist; loose fibers can shed if not set | Can rub off on fingers, caps and pillowcases | Can mark collars and pillowcases, especially before it dries |
| Removal | Washes out with regular shampoo | Usually washes out with shampoo | Usually washes out; skin overspray may need extra cleansing |
| Best for which thinning pattern | Diffuse thinning, thin crown, see-through top | Wide parting, small hairline gaps, temples | Widening parting with grey roots, quick large-area tinting |
Which hides thinning best, fibers or spray?
If your main worry is that your hair looks thin and flat, fibers win, because they are the only one of the three that adds volume. A spray or powder will make the scalp less visible from a distance, but in bright office lighting or a wedding photo, fine hair still looks fine. Fibers change the outline of the hair itself.
Thinning at the crown is a good example. The crown is where light hits the scalp from above and where hair whorls make gaps look bigger. Tinting the scalp there helps a little, but filling the space between strands helps more. We cover the step-by-step routine in our guide to hair fibers for crown thinning.

When might a powder or spray suit you better?
We sell fibers, but we would rather you buy the right product. A powder or spray can be the better choice in these cases:
- Your parting is the only problem. If the rest of your hair has good density and only the centre parting looks wide, a powder applied along the line is precise and quick.
- You have a very short buzz cut. Fibers need some hair length to cling to. On hair cut very close to the scalp, a tint can look more even.
- You want to hide grey roots at the same time. Root touch-up sprays are designed for this. Fibers are not hair dye and do not colour your own strands.
- The area is fully bald and smooth. Neither option will create hair there, but a tint may reduce the shine contrast. The Mumbai review says fibers have limited use on completely bald areas.
If your hair loss is sudden, patchy or painful, see a dermatologist. Camouflage products hide thinning; they do not treat its cause.
How do they hold up in Indian weather?
Humidity, monsoon drizzle, two-wheeler helmets and long wedding functions are the real test.
Powders and many sprays are the first to suffer in sweat. Pigment that sits on the scalp mixes with sweat and can leave a dark line on the forehead or the inside of a helmet. Fibers on their own can also loosen with sweat and wind, which is why we always recommend a setting mist.
Our Hard Hair Mist (60 ml ₹676, 165 ml ₹1,499) is sprayed after the fibers and locks them against wind, sweat and light rain. It also keeps fibers off your pillow and collar.
Can you use hair fibers and powder or spray together?
You can, but we suggest trying fibers on their own first. Most people find that fibers plus Hard Hair Mist covers enough, and every extra layer adds more product that can rub off or look heavy.
If your scalp still shows through on a very thin patch, some people layer like this:
- Start with clean, fully dry hair. Do any heat styling first.
- Apply a thin layer of powder or tint only on the visible scalp, not on the hair. Let it dry completely.
- Shake fibers over the area and pat gently so they settle on the hair.
- Set everything with Hard Hair Mist from about a forearm’s length away.
- Check in daylight and in a mirror from above before you leave.
A few cautions. Keep the tint very light, or it can clump with the fibers and look muddy. The tint and the fibers should match the same hair colour, so pick a powder close to your fiber shade rather than a lighter one. Try the combination at home on a weekend before wearing it to the office or a function. And if your scalp feels itchy or irritated after any product, stop using it.
How do you pick the right fiber shade?
Shade matters more with fibers than with tints, because fibers sit on the hair itself. We offer Black, Dark Brown, Medium Brown and Light Brown. If you are between two shades, choose the darker one. For grey or salt-and-pepper hair, Black or Dark Brown usually blends best, as we do not make a grey shade. Our hair fiber shade guide has photos and a simple matching method.
Please do not mix two fiber shades to create a custom colour. It tends to look uneven up close.
What does each option cost per use?
Prices for powders and sprays vary widely, so compare per application rather than per pack. For fibers, a 10 g canister (₹599) gives roughly 15 applications, and a 25 g canister (₹1,871) gives about 37. Larger sizes cost less per use. If you are starting out, the Fibers and Mist combo from ₹999 is the simplest way to try the full routine.
Frequently asked questions
Are hair fibers better than a root touch-up spray?
For thinning hair, usually yes, because fibers add volume to existing strands while a spray only tints the scalp and roots. A spray is better if you mainly want to hide grey roots or tint a wide area quickly.
Is hair thickening powder the same as hair fibers?
No. Hair thickening powder is pigment that colours the scalp and roots. Hair fibers are tiny strands that cling to your hair by static and make each hair look thicker.
Will hair fibers or powder stain my pillow?
Powders and sprays can rub off on pillowcases and collars, especially before they dry. Fibers set with a hair mist transfer very little.
Which is best for a receding hairline?
For a soft, natural hairline, a light powder can work well because it is precise. Fibers also work at the hairline if there is some fine hair there. Apply fibers sparingly and pat the edge with your fingers so it does not look like a hard line.
Do hair fibers work on completely bald areas?
Not well. Fibers need existing hair to cling to. On a fully bald, smooth patch they have nothing to hold onto, so a tint or another solution may suit you better.
How do I remove hair fibers, powder or spray?
All three are temporary. Our fibers wash out with regular shampoo. Most powders and sprays also shampoo out, though spray that lands on the skin may need a second wash.
